Christchurch decks cop both ends of the weather: harsh UV through nor'west summers and long damp spells in winter. A deck that gets a little attention each season will outlast a neglected one by years — and none of the jobs are big.
Autumn is the setup season. Clear fallen leaves before they mat into the gaps — composted leaf litter holds moisture against boards and seeds the algae that turns decks treacherous. Check shaded boards first; the south side and under-rail strips always go green earliest. A stiff broom and a hose-down now saves a deep clean later.
Winter is about drainage and air. Keep gaps clear so water runs off instead of pooling, shift planters onto feet so air moves underneath, and avoid piling firewood or soil against the frame. If boards are already slippery, a proper deck wash beats a water-blaster on full fan — aggressive blasting furs soft timber and opens it to faster decay.
Spring is inspection season. Walk every board and step: flex for bounce, probe joins and ledger lines for softness, and check handrails for wobble. Tighten fixings that have worked loose over winter — screws back out as timber swells and shrinks. Anything spongy underfoot is a repair flag, not a maintenance task; catch rot in one board before it reaches the joist beneath.
Summer is coating season, and Canterbury UV sets the timetable. When water stops beading and starts soaking in, the finish has failed and bare timber is greying. Wash, let the deck dry thoroughly, then oil or stain in mild conditions — not in the midday nor'wester, which skins finishes before they penetrate. Sunny exposures always need recoating before shaded ones.
Year-round habits matter more than any single product: sweep regularly, keep soil off the frame, and re-coat before failure rather than after. Decks looked after this way rarely need more than boards and attention — and when attention lapses past the point of care, a rebuild on the sound frame brings them back.
