Picket Fences & Gates: Kerb Appeal That Works

The white picket fence endures because it does two jobs at once: it defines the boundary crisply while leaving the garden visible. From the street, a straight picket line with a true gate reads as care — and care is contagious on a street.
Design a picket frontage around three lines: height, spacing and the gate. Heights around hip level keep openness; going higher starts to feel defensive and defeats the style's purpose. Even spacing matters more than people expect — the eye forgives a lot, but not wandering gaps. And the gate is the handshake of the whole fence: it should swing freely, latch first time, and sit level with the runs either side.
Paint versus stain is the perennial question. Paint gives the classic crisp white and maximum contrast with planting, but demands proper prep and shows failure as flaking. Stain (including whitewash tones) is kinder to recoat and moves with the timber, at the cost of some brightness. Whichever you choose, end-grain — the tops of pickets — drinks finish fastest and fails first, so seal tops generously.
Planting makes or breaks pickets. Climbers and hedges softening the line look wonderful right up until they lever palings apart or hold damp against the timber. Keep vigorous growth trimmed back, never let mulch bury the bottom rail, and give irrigation a path that does not soak the fence daily.
Maintenance is small and regular: an annual wash, touch-ups on chips before moisture enters, and a full recoat when the film chalks or thins — typically every few years on the weather side. Individual pickets swap in minutes, which is the style's quiet superpower: damage never means starting over.
